Vancouver, BC, Canada, July 2023 – Bridgemans Services Group and its joint venture partner, the Haisla Nation, have announced a multimillion-dollar contract to kick off the next stage in the construction of LNG Canada’s new tug berth in Kitimat, BC.
The recently awarded contract calls for the construction of a 60-metre-long breakwater and four 45-metre-long tug berth floats by Pacific Marine Construction, a full-service marine contractor located on the territory of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation in Campbell River, BC.
When constructed, the new tug berth will host the escort tugs and harbour tugs that will provide ship-assist and escort towing services to LNG carriers calling at LNG Canada’s LNG export facility. Bridgemans Kitamaat Joint Venture, a Haisla Nation partnership, secured the engineering, procurement, and construction contract to install marine piles, floating docks, and a breakwater in January 2023. To date, the joint venture has completed design, site investigation and surveying, and installed all the required piles at the site.
“We are very excited to work with Pacific Marine Construction to design and build the breakwater and tug berths for LNG Canada’s new LNG export facility,” said Brian Grange, president of Bridgemans. “Our contract with Pacific Marine Construction reinforces our commitment to our First Nations partnerships while the tug berth represents the growth of our company from a thriving marine transportation and accommodation services business into marine construction.”
Cory Handyside, the owner of 55-employee Pacific Marine Construction, said his company shares Bridgemans’ entrepreneurial spirit.
“Our inhouse team of designers, engineers, dock-builders and marine fabrication specialists has brought marine structures to life for clients and business along the West Coast for more than 30 years,” said Mr. Handyside. “We appreciate the opportunity to build the new docks and breakwater for Bridgemans Kitamaat Joint Venture and LNG Canada.”
Bridgemans has been a partner of the Haisla Nation in the Kitimat region since 2014, when they provided workforce accommodations onboard an inshore floatel. Close engagement with the Haisla Nation and local communities has been an essential component of Bridgemans’ growth and continued success in the marine service industry.
“We have been providing services to LNG Canada in the Douglas Channel since 2018,” added Mr. Grange. “We are proud to be a local Canadian company and excited to continue our support of the LNG Canada project, working in partnership with the Haisla Nation.”
“We are committed to creating opportunities that benefit communities locally and across B.C., and we congratulate Pacific Marine Construction on this contract award,” said Teresa Waddington, Vice President Corporate Relations of LNG Canada. “The tug berth and breakwater are essential to the operation of our battery-powered and low emissions tugboats, one of the greenest tug fleets ever assembled. We look forward to seeing this work progress through the next stage of construction.”
Construction of the tug berth facility commenced in early 2023 and is scheduled to be fully completed in early 2024.
