Challenge:

The Kitimat/Skeena region is a becoming home to more and more industrial and natural resource projects in recent years. It has an advantageous Asia-Pacific location, large industrial tracts of land in the area, and a skilled labour force. In some years, Kitimat contributes up to 11% of BC’s manufacturing GDP and boasts strong growth prospects. However, the Kitimat/Skeena region did not have a private, independent roll on/roll off facility to serve the region’s transportation and industrial needs.

Solution:

Bridgemans Kitamaat Joint Venture installed a roll on/roll off (RoRo) facility for a local client in Kitimat, BC, initially providing three to four cargo loads a week. The facility is protected by a 122-meter (400-foot) breakwater, can accept barges up to 91 metres (300 feet) long in all weather conditions, and offers 24/7 access to the Douglas Channel.

The RoRo is the only private, independent RoRo facility in the region. Canadian-flagged vessels can utilize the facility as a cost-effective alternative to others in the region that are controlled by industry. The RoRo facility offers barge and vessel handling, short or long-term laydown, and secure CCTV-controlled access.

The facility has the capacity to support loads up to 63,500 kg gross vehicle weight (GVW) and can accept heavier loads in consultation with Bridgemans engineers. The facility can also manage tractor trailers or containers and can stage them in the laydown yard with both short and long-term storage options.

Most recently, Bridgemans Services Group opened a new 10-person Kitimat office at the RoRo facility.
